The survey department is essentially a technical outfit, which has five (5) sections each performing a distinct function from the other. Despite the distinctive nature of each section, they are, however, integrated in a manner that each section has a vital impact in the final output of any product of technical nature.
As one of the five departments in the Ministry of Lands, Surveys and Country Planning, it is headed by the Surveyor General (S.G) and other senior technical officers as illustrated in the Ministry’s organogramme.
The Various Section of this Department are:
- Administrative Section.
- The Field Section
- The computation Section
- The Cartographic Section
- The Lithographic/ Photogrammetric Section.

The Functions of these sections include:
- Administrative Section -
- The Surveyor- General (S.G.) and the most Senior Deputy Surveyor General (D.S.G) plays the dual role of supervising the technical functions of the department ands also the administrative functions such as attending to personnel and their records, treating of mails e.t.c. which is facilitated by a small pool of clerks.
- The survey store unit is also under the Administrative section. It houses and stores important equipment of the department for sake keeping.
- The field section -
- This section is made up of all surveyors and field attendants whose duties include physical demarcation of any piece of property so as to define a title on the ground with a view of generating data for obtaining certificate of occupancy over it. This section also interprets and translates the plan physically into the ground before passing it for further processing.
- Computing section -
This section is manned by surveyor whose duties it is strictly maintain professional ethics. These are professional who stay in to the cross check and certify that work by the field surveyors meet lay down standards and procedures. Where any of these is lacking the fields surveyors is sent back to site. However if the field work is satisfactory, the item is now sent to cartographic section.
- The cartographic section -
- The Charting Sub-section - These sub-sections duties involves surveys reporting after computing an approximate area of property and a rough geographical position of the site is identified on a MASTER MAP. They also produce final charting needed to depict property and exactly on MASTER MAP of allotted area and also the number written against the area plotted.
- The Drawing Sub-Section: This section is charge with the reasonability of drawing the final plan on a transparent medium in a standard format stating all information about the title. Also under this section there is a billing unit which prepares survey bills of all plans prepared. This unit falls under cartographic section and does not fall in either of the sub-sections. The Department also serves as records and maps sales units for every titles holder in the state.
The section has two (2) sub-sections namely:
- Lithographic / Photogrammestric Section -
- The Lithographic (printing) - This section is charged with the responsibilities of printing Forms and other Security Document used in the Ministry. e.g. Application (Land 1) Forms, Certificate of Occupancy Forms and Plans etc.
- This Photogrammetric Section - This section interprets areas photographs, and the process of line map making when fed with information required by the Field Surveyors, the Photogrametrist, the Cartographers and the Lithogrametrist.
This section also has two (2) units namely the Lithographic or printing unit and the photogrammetric unit.
